Abilities of Northwest Jersey, Inc. is seeking local high school students with disabilities to participate in a paid internship program with local businesses. Each internship pays $18 per hour for 150 hours ($2,700 total).
To be eligible for the program, which is made possible by a grant from the NJ Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS), students must be between the ages of 14-21 and live in Warren, northern Hunterdon, southern Sussex, and western Morris Counties. Students must be eligible for DVRS services and be committed to working on-site a minimum of 10 hours per week.
“This is more than a summer job; it’s an opportunity for student interns to learn skills and gain on-the-job training in a field that aligns with their interests and career goals,” said Abilities Youth Services Manager Tedi Sue Sera. “Through our well-established relationships with businesses throughout the area, from restaurants to retail, technology, health care and educational institutions, Abilities is able to provide each student with a unique and rewarding experience.”
John M., an intern from Phillipsburg, NJ, is one example of the benefits of the program. John said his internship with the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Washington, NJ “made a huge difference in how I see myself and what I can do.”
He explained, “My internship showed me how to work hard and take responsibility for myself. It taught me how important it is to be disciplined and to be on time. I learned that when unexpected things happen, that I am prepared and can take action to help others.”
To begin the application process, contact Sera by phone (908-689-1118 x7210) or email (tsera@abilitiesnw.com). Each student will be required to complete a DVRS referral form and attend training sessions before and after each internship.
