Our Process
When challenging behaviors arise, the Behavior Supports team at Abilities:
- Conducts functional behavior assessment (FBA)/functional analysis (FA) of the behavior in the setting in which they are occurring
- Begins data collection on the behaviors occurring
- Reviews the history of behaviors and/or interventions previously used
- Begins completing behavior assessment tools
- Conducts staff interviews
- Evaluates and makes changes within the environment
- Develops individualized behavior interventions (Behavior Support Plans – BSPs/ Behavior Intervention Strategies – BIS) based on assessment results
- Monitors implementation of BSPs/BIS data collection, maintenance, and generalization of skills
- Supports the individual as an active part of their team
- Promotes positive environments to assist in minimizing behaviors, while increasing skills
- Generates progress reports, graphs of data and trend analysis, etc.
- Creates professional reports and graphs on behaviors and progress to share with other professionals
These services are provided through our Behavioral Support team members, which currently include two behavior specialists, and a student intern (for spring semester internship class) and a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
Our Behavioral Supports Team
The behavioral supports team has a combined total experience of more than 45+ years in effectively working with adults with autism and developmental disabilities.
Our team is a support to the program in which an individual with disabilities participates. We ensure our duties are carried out in accordance with agency, state, federal and professional standards of practice (Behavior Analysis Certification Board – BACB).
Staff training is conducted on approved behavior interventions, basic ABA principles, and Positive Behavior Support.
As the demand for Behavioral Services increases, the Behavior team is also looking at future growth.
Growth can include our behavior specialists seeking advanced degrees that will allow them to become certified with the BACB and the addition of Behavior Technicians, who would complete the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification process/examination and supervision requirements by the BACB.
