STAR Program
Classroom and Community Based Instruction
STAR is a classroom and community based collaboration between Abilities of Northwest Jersey and Warren Community College.
The prevocational instruction takes place on the college campus in Washington, NJ.
This is achieved through person-centered goal-setting, exposure to classroom and community-based instruction, job sampling, internships, and follow-along employment services.
The STAR Classroom
While participating in STAR, individuals will complete interest inventories, engage in soft skills instruction and self-advocacy, create a resume, practice interviewing skills, explore careers, and participate in job sampling/internships.
Classroom instruction will also incorporate basic problem solving and communication skills, financial literacy, customer service skills, and the skills one needs to obtain and maintain a job.
For individuals interested in continuing education, instruction will also include identifying educational opportunities and assistance with enrolling.
Upon Completion of the STAR Program
Upon the completion of STAR, we have a seamless entry into our employment supports program.
There the individuals will either be assigned a job coach to continue follow along employment services or be assigned a job developer to continue with the job search.
STAR is offered through an individual’s Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) budget, as a fee for service option through NJ Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS), or through your local high school as an out- of-school placement.
